Meteorological Analysis: An incredibly strong maritime winter storm has developed in the region, with a circulation centered just west of Kyushu as of 14:00 JST. An extensive quasi-stationary front has developed as a result, extending from off the coast of China in the Yellow Sea, to the aforementioned circulation near Kyushu, to then extend further east across the western portions of Honshu, before existing into the Pacific Ocean just southeast of Shizuoka Prefecture. This synoptic system has induced a vast swath of gale-force winds along the Sea of Japan coast, producing sustained overcast conditions over much of mainland Japan. The stability of the cloud ceilings has allowed the bulk of the showers to stay offshore, with brighter-than-usual overcast skies in the Kansai/Kinki region.
